Bone Mechanics from Finite Element Modeling and Micro-computed Tomography: Validation of an Orthotropic Material Model with Fused Deposition Modeling

چکیده
It is commonly postulated that local mechanics (tissue stress or strain) is related to stimuli for bone remodeling [1]. A micro finite element ( FE) solver was developed in our lab to numerically predict the local stress and strain in bone structure [2,3]. Micro-computed tomography ( CT) can provide high resolution image data suitable to the FE solver and allows non-destructive, three-dimensional morphological and mechanical analysis of bone. With newly developed in vivo CT, FE simulation of bone mechanics can be evaluated over time. However, it is important that FE models be validated for numerical accuracy. This is problematic because it is difficult to perform experiments on 1:1 scaled bone.

Prediction of Human Vertebral Compressive Strength Using Quantitative Computed Tomography Based Nonlinear Finite Element Method
Introduction: Because of the importance of vertebral compressive fracture (VCF) role in increasing the patients’ death rate and reducing their quality of life, many studies have been conducted for a noninvasive prediction of vertebral compressive strength based on bone mineral density (BMD) determination and recently finite element analysis. In this study, QCT-voxel based nonlinear finite eleme...
متن کاملNon-isotropic Material Distribution Topology Optimization for Fused Deposition Modeling Products
Mechanical properties of products produced with the Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) process are known to be dependent on bead direction, especially when short fiber reinforcement is added to the polymer filament feedstock. As a result, the structural performance of fiber-filled FDM parts is expected to be improved by simultaneously computing preferred deposition directions while optimizing the ...
متن کاملA novel approach to estimate trabecular bone anisotropy from stress tensors.
Continuum finite element (FE) models of bones and bone-implant configurations are usually based on clinical CT scans. In virtually all of these models, material properties assigned to the bone elements are chosen as isotropic. It has been shown, however, that cancellous bone can be highly anisotropic and that its elastic behavior is best described as orthotropic. Material models have been propo...
متن کاملFinite Element Modeling of Strain Rate and Grain Size Dependency in Nanocrystalline Materials
Nanocrystalline materials show a higher strain-rate sensitivity in contrast to the conventional coarse-grained materials and a different grain size dependency. To explain these phenomenon, a finite element model is constructed that considers both grain interior and grain boundary deformation of nanocrystalline materials. The model consist of several crystalline cores with different orientations...

INTRODUCTION: High-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (μMRI) based micro-finite-element (μFE) modeling at peripheral sites is emerging as an attractive means to assess short-term alterations in bone’s mechanical competence caused by disease or in response to intervention [1, 2]. In this approach, subject-specific bone’s 3D micro-architecture derived from in-vivo μMRI is taken as input to a f...
